Day 81: Proud

Things in this country took a turn for the worse last night when Trump declared martial law and threatened American citizens with military force. He didn’t use the phrase “martial law,” but it’s hard to interpret what he said in any other way, especially after seeing videos and pictures from D.C. today. I am scared, and I am angry, and I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do in response to this turn of events. I only know that I have to do something, even if it’s just flexing the credit card in support of Democratic candidates.

But I have to be honest and say that I’m not sure this country is going to make it to November in one piece. These protests started as a reaction to systemic racism and police brutality, and they were justified. By and large, they were peaceful. I don’t think protesters are responsible for the majority of the violence that has since erupted, or for the escalation. If Trump had done what he ought to have, the protests might have ended by now. All he had to do was acknowledge the reasons behind the protests, say some comforting words, offer support, and assign some people to work on the problem–small potatoes for the most powerful man on earth.

Instead he responded with threats and martial law. This is not merely unpresidential, but undemocratic and unAmerican. And the Republican party continues to support him! They are tearing this country apart. So I am thoroughly ashamed of America’s institutions today. But I am so proud of every American who continues to protest peacefully. Through their efforts our country may yet be saved.
