Day 267: Saturday Miscellany

  • Last night I put in an order with my favorite local bookstore. I usually stop by there in December to do some Christmas shopping, and it seemed only right that I should do so this year, even if only through their website. They called me today to let me know that one of the items I had ordered was going to ship late, so it might not arrive in time for Christmas. I suppose I could have cancelled the item and ordered it from Amazon instead, but my feeling about this Christmas is that shipping delays are inevitable, and that she who is not prepared to receive some late packages is not being realistic about the state of things. Plus I liked that they called me personally, and I didn’t want to punish them for their forthrightness. So I told them to go ahead with the order. If it arrives late, then the giving season will be extended, and that doesn’t sound like such a horrible thing.
  • However, in my usual self-contradictory way, I simultaneously believe that all packages will arrive on time, even those I’m told won’t arrive until after Christmas, just because.
  • I had a peculiar dream last night. In this dream I was working for the Joe Biden team. Somebody accidentally knocked Biden to the floor, and he seemed unsure who I was as I helped him get back up. I thought to myself, “Oh, no. It’s true what they say about his dementia!” But then his face lit up with recognition, and he became very animated, gleeful even, as he grabbed a folder off a desk and handed it to me. Inside the folder was a description of my next mission, an unusual job that he wanted me to handle personally. I cannot remember now what the mission was, which is too bad, because it has left me with the feeling of having forgotten something important.
  • It is raining heavily again today, courtesy of a noreaster. At some point this evening the rain might turn to snow, which would be a nice change. My husband and I are worried, though, that we’re heading from one extreme type of weather to another. Neither flooding nor a snowpocalypse seems any better than drought, and to have both in the same year would be a bit much, don’t you think? But when it comes to weather, you get what you get, and then you try very hard not to get upset. [BTW, the rain switched to snow while I was taking a break from writing this post. It is a heavy, thick snow, and the wind is hitting the trees with a mighty roar, like the ocean crashing on the beach. New England weather at its New Englandiest!]
  • I forgot to put a ticket in the Advent calendar before I went to bed last night. Whoops! My punishment is that the ticket, which I put in the calendar this morning, is an invitation to Craft Night in Mommy’s Office. That means I must clean off my desk and get all the craft materials ready before the appointed time, yet another thing to do.
