I typically aspire to read 52 books each year, which is a nice and easy pace of roughly one per week. I exceeded that goal in 2014. My grand total was 78.<\/a><\/p>\n

I wish I could say that it was an entirely good thing. Alas, I did much of that reading just to escape the real world, and at the cost of ignoring people and tasks that deserved more attention. Reading is one of my coping mechanisms. It’s a good one, and sometimes I need it, so I’m not going to beat myself up too much for using it. I just hope that I won’t need to lean so heavily on it next year, and that most of my reading will be purely for enjoyment.<\/p>\n

My favorites, in no particular order:<\/p>\n

  4. The Hunger Games<\/em> by Suzanne Collins, A<\/a><\/li>\n
  5. Fablehaven<\/em> series by Brandon Mull, varying grades<\/a><\/li>\n
  6. Far Far Away<\/em> by Tom McNeal, A<\/a><\/li>\n
  7. Harry Potter series (first four books) <\/em>by J.K. Rowling, varying grades, all rereads<\/li>\n
  8. The Lost World<\/em> by Arthur Conan Doyle, A-<\/a><\/li>\n
  9. Night Film<\/em> by Marisha Pessl, A<\/li>\n
  10. Moonwalking With Einstein<\/em> by Joshua Foer, A-<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I’m happy to say that at least a quarter of my 2014 reading choices were written for an adult audience (instead of children or young adults), a few were even classics, and some were non-fiction. But I went a little heavy on the fiction, particularly the fantasy genre. In 2015, I’d like to read more non-fiction and poetry, and to seek out a more diverse group of authors and genres.<\/p>\n
