Birds Near the House

I was walking into the kitchen this afternoon when I saw a flash of orange out the back-door window. As I got closer, I could see that it was the orange bird again. It was hunting for food right near the house.

Orange Bird: My best guess is that it’s a female northern oriole.

While I was taking pictures of my new orange friend, I was inadvertently irritating my nearest neighbor. Here is a picture of the look it gave me when I pointed the camera in its direction.

Cool oriole! I didn’t know there were any other types besides the Baltimore. Pretty and informative!

I used my field guide for deciding which bird it was, but my field guide may be out of date in calling it a “northern oriole.” I think that they used to call all the orioles by that name, but now they call the two types “Baltimore oriole” and “Bullock’s oriole.” So mine was probably a Baltimore. In any event, I hope to see more orioles in the neighborhood. They’re very pretty!

The Baltimore orioles I’ve seen have been more black with bright orange, rather than orange with gray, but online sources suggest yours is probably a female Baltimore, rather than the males I’ve seen. Cool!
