It looks bad, it smells worse, and it’s called popcorn cooked way too long in a microwave. You can recognize it by the billowing clouds of yellow-tinged smoke and the aggressive reek of burnt corn. Microwaves accused of this “heat crime” can expect some hard consequences. In one recent case, the guilty oven was evicted from its home for smoking and stinking to High Heaven. Insiders say that the abandoned appliance hasn’t had food in days, and may never again.

You only have to spend an afternoon with a child to realise that most of them, without even trying, are poets. . . . They put words together in funny ways.

We kept the microwave. It was a while before the smell of burnt popcorn finally wore off, but it did, and the oven continued to cook perfectly fine until earlier this year (2011), when we finally had to chuck it. It had begun to make a weird noise, as if something were arcing inside, and it was making a nasty smell, like burnt paint. We think what happened is that the paint around the edge of the opening had worn off (or degraded) and the microwaves were reacting with the bare metal. Too bad. I must have owned it for at least ten years. The replacement oven always sounds like it’s struggling. We wonder if it will last even ten months. I hate to be cliche, but they just don’t make ’em like they used to!
