Mystery Thing #3

I’ve been on the lookout for caterpillars ever since I started hearing chomping noises in the woods. I’m happy to report that I haven’t seen an excessive quantity. There have just been a few here and there.

This little guy and his friends were hanging out next to the walking path.

Do you know what kind of caterpillar he is?

It was annoying. I sat here with reference books all around me, including a butterfly field guide, and could not find the answer. It took me a long time to figure it out, but I think this picture may be a bit deceptive. You can see that he has red on him, but it’s muted. That made me doubt that he could be a Baltimore checkerspot caterpillar, because they look more red than black in most pictures. However, I was able to find some pictures online that looked more like this one, and I can’t imagine what else it would be, so that’s my answer—Baltimore checkerspot caterpillar.
