Mystery Flower #7

I may not have done much running lately, but I have at least done some walking. Yesterday I went to the old path and walked my usual route. I had to take it slower, especially on the inclines, but I made it all the way around. There are some pretty flowers out right now, some of which I recognized, like wild strawberry, and some which I didn’t, like Mystery Flower #7.

I know I’ve seen this flower around before, but it’s name is a mystery. See the comments for my best guess at its identity.

It would be easy to mistake this for a goldenrod unless you know, as I do, that goldenrods bloom much later in the year. If I believed my book of New England flora, I’d think it was golden alexanders, but something told me to keep looking. After comparing it to every yellow flower I could find, I decided this must be common winter cress. Common winter cress is a member of the mustard family and parts of it are supposedly edible, but for now I’ll stick to salad and such, thanks.
