Stuck

It is one thing to have a car and only use it when you really need it. Then being at home is a choice, and you can even pat yourself on the back for being virtuous. It is something else to be without a car. Then you’re stuck at home, and it feels like prison. When I complained about it this morning, my husband said, “After I get home, I’ll take you anywhere you need to go.” I gnashed my teeth at him. He was completely missing the point. It’s not about going places. It’s about freedom and independence. If I do not get my car back soon, I will go crazy!

Piles of Flowers

I have such sweet children. They both picked bouquets of dandelions and tiny violets for me on the way to the bus stop this morning. It’s early in the season, so most of the flowers are too short-stemmed to fit in a vase. That makes the bunches of flowers less like bouquets and more like piles, but they sure are cheerful. The weather this week has been a mix of April showers and warm, sunny days. Soon the violets will grow tall enough for proper bouquets, and then we will fill the house with them.

Slow Progress

I feel like everything’s moving at a snail’s pace these days, but at least it is moving. Slow progress is better than no progress. For some projects, we may even see the light at the end of the tunnel soon.

  • My car has been in limbo for months, but we have finally, officially made a decision. Our mechanic has agreed to fix the car at a price that we’re willing to pay, and this morning we told him to go ahead with the repairs. There’s still the chance that the transmission will go bad in the near future, but everything in life is a crapshoot. A replacement car would not come with many guarantees either. It would, however, come with a hefty price tag. So we’re fixing my car, and then we’re going to give it a thorough washing and pretend that it’s new. I realize that I’m in a minority for trying to keep a car that’s over 13 years old, but it’s a good minority 🙂
  • My husband and I are in the process of painting our bedroom. It’s long overdue. We’d already be done if we could just find exactly the right shade of color. But we’ve chosen gray, and gray is tricky. The right gray would be sophisticated and restful, and it would make certain accent colors glow. The wrong gray would be gloomy, and we’d feel like we were living in an institution or an underground bunker. We’ve got several paint samples displayed on the wall, and we don’t like any of them. They’re all too blue, or too dark, or too light. We’ll find the right color eventually. In the meantime, we keep looking, and that’s progress of a sort.
  • I haven’t been writing lately. I feel terrible about that. But I have been working on my novel. Really, I have! My husband gave me a new program to use. It’s called Scrivener. I think it will help. I’ve imported most of my text files into it, not just for my novel, but for all of my half-finished projects. I don’t expect this program to fix all of my problems, but it certainly does alleviate some of them. And, once I’ve written all the scenes for my novel and decided on an order for them, this program can put them into book form instantaneously. I could go from long-term procrastinator to published e-book author in the blink of an eye. For now, let it be enough that I finished my outline and have a blueprint for moving forward.

First Violets of 2018

Livia’s eyes are better than mine. She spotted two violets in the yard today. I’m not sure which of the two flowers ought to be officially designated First Violet of 2018. One of them clearly had something to say, so I chose its picture for this post.

“Pssst!” the violet whispered excitedly. “Spring is here. Pass it on!”

Today in Five Senses

SMELL:

  • I made basmati rice today. I love the way it smells as it’s cooking.
  • The first dandelion bloomed today, and I held it up to my nose. I never realized before that dandelions have their own smell. It’s just not as strong as the scent of certain other flowers.

TOUCH:

  • The weather is finally warm enough to go outside without a jacket, but the ground is still pleasantly chilly against bare feet.

SIGHT:

  • Wild turkeys walked past our house this afternoon.
  • The daffodils and hyacinths are coming into bloom.
  • There is a bird nesting on the downspout near the corner of the house. Every time I walk past, she freaks out and zooms into the woods.

TASTE: I ate part of a navel orange this morning. It was delicious and sweet. Did you know that the cluster near the navel is actually a second orange? Food for thought.

HEARING:

  • The peepers are peeping like mad, singing their spring song.
  • Yesterday someone mentioned A-ha’s “Take on Me.” It got thoroughly stuck in my head, so I listened to it on my streaming service today. It’s still a great song, one of the best from that era.

Let’s Avoid a Misunderstanding

My office is a mess, so I’ve been trying to clean it up. Today I piled together a bunch of papers that need to be filed. Then I slapped a sticky note on top and wrote, “Put me away!” But, now that I think about it, that probably wasn’t the best wording choice. I guess I’d better hurry up and file the papers before anyone sees the note and takes it the wrong way! 😉

Lemons

Marshall was supposed to bring a piece of fruit to school today for a special science class about different types of seeds. When the teacher sent out a sign-up list last week, I signed Marshall up to bring an orange. We always have  oranges around, sometimes even several varieties, so I thought it would be easy.

But last night it occurred to me that most oranges are seedless. In fact, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d found a seed. So I was pretty sure that the navel orange he had chosen was going to be a dud.

I ransacked the produce drawer. There were two types of oranges. Both turned out to be seedless. They didn’t even have noticeable vestigial seeds. Argh. I was just about to give up when I found a lemon. I thought, “Why not?” Lemons always seem to have seeds, perhaps because no one has bothered to breed a seedless variety. So I put the lemon in the bag with the orange, just in case.

It only just occurred to me how funny that is—I didn’t want to send my kid to school with a dud, so I gave him a lemon!

Mr. Spider Catches Some Snow

It snowed on Friday and, because I had promised myself that I would walk if it snowed, I went for a hike in the woods. The snow wasn’t sticking much, and the trails were muddy rather than snow-covered, but it was a nice walk. I don’t think Mr. Spider was so happy with the weather, though.

Snow was the only thing my spidery friend caught in his web that day.

Sweet Victory

As a child, I was never able to solve the Rubik’s Cube. Today I solved the smaller version with four squares per side. I was so pleased with myself that I shouted a celebratory “Woohoo!” and startled the children.

Truth is, I’ve always been slightly ashamed that I not only couldn’t solve the Rubik’s Cube but also didn’t care enough to learn how to. Solving the little one makes me feel a little less losery. And, since I had told my husband that I was certain I could solve it, and since he had expressed some, shall we say, skepticism, solving it was a sweet victory indeed!

Accidentally Purplish

Last Saturday I took the kids to an Easter egg hunt. It was a sunny day, the kids found a lot of eggs, and Livia got to play with her best friends from school. We had a good time.

But April is the start of tick season and since we had all walked through grass during the hunt, I decided to wash our clothing when we got home. Big mistake. When I opened up the washing machine, everything I had washed in that light-colored load was tinged with purple. Purple! How could this happen?

Well, at the Easter to-do, the kids ate some cookies, and I grabbed a napkin with which to wipe the crumbs off their faces. There wasn’t a trash can handy, so afterward I shoved that vividly purple napkin into the pocket of my brand-new jacket. I’m usually good about checking pockets before I throw things into the wash, but I somehow forgot to check that particular one. Oops.

I think it’s fair to say that clothing ought to be truly purple or not purple at all, never merely purplish. A touch of purple just makes things look dingy. My brand-new jacket and shirt, plus several other assorted garments, are now an ugly, not-quite-purple color. Chlorine bleach doesn’t work well here (thanks to the metal content of our well water), and the non-chlorine bleach that I tried was ineffective. The clothes will never look quite right again.

Who would have thought that one forgotten 5×5 square of disposable paper could be so destructive?
