Inspiration Abounds

It’s amazing how often I am reminded to work on my novel. Trees are everywhere, not just outside, but inside. I find them in art and literature, even in architecture. At Livia’s art show there were some paintings of trees, and the enormous room made me think of the arboretum in my story. Helen Keller mentioned trees several times in her autobiography, and at times she hit a tone similar to what I hope to set in certain scenes from my novel. Inspiration abounds.

SITY: Spring!

When the crocuses got buried under the snow of several successive storms, I thought they were goners. They weren’t. I almost think the snow did them some good. They’re blooming like mad now.

As I was taking these pictures, my husband said, “I know it’s spring when my honey is outside with her pant legs rolled up.” So true. Once it gets warm enough, I start going outside barefoot to take pictures. I roll up my pants so that I won’t accidentally sweep up any ticks. Pics are good and ticks are not.

Now that it’s spring, I will be outside much more often. And yes, I will have my pants rolled high, looking silly no doubt. Spring will do that to a person. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Big Event

One of Livia’s pieces of artwork was chosen by her art teacher for a special showcase. We were invited to the opening of the showcase, which was being hosted by a local business. I wasn’t expecting anything big, so I was in for quite a surprise. The building was big, and the crowd was big. The quantity of art was big (all the local schools were represented). The refreshments included a very big selection of cookies. Years from now, if the children remember anything from the event, I suspect it will be the cookies. For kids, cookies are a big event!

Death Can Wait

At 7:50, the time to which the alarm on my clock-radio is set, the local radio station is in the middle of announcing the obituaries. Death is not the subject I want to wake up to. It’s also not something I’d want to listen to while drinking my morning coffee, or during a morning commute, so I do not understand why the radio people have it scheduled so early. Death can wait at least until lunch, don’t you think?

Anyway, I’m going to have to change the settings on my clock-radio!

It’s Snow Big Deal

School was cancelled yesterday due to an impending snowstorm, but that storm didn’t drop a single flake. Until this morning, that is. Now it is finally snowing, and the kids are at school.

Somebody really messed that one up!

Never Gonna Happen

Sometimes I think I’m getting close to defeating Laundry Mountain. Then I start to do some regular cleaning. I find clothes lying around in random places, and I strip the sheets from the beds. They will all have to be washed. Then I notice that there are no clean towels in the bathroom, and the bathroom rugs are looking kind of grungy. So I go from feeling like I’m finally on top of the laundry situation to feeling crushed under a laundry avalanche.

This Is a List

Below is a list of Barbara Michaels novels. I cobbled the list together from information I found at several websites. It looks as though Barbara Mertz published about a book per year under this pseudonym, for a total of twenty-nine. It’s an impressive list, especially considering that she had other pseudonyms.

I’ve created this list for myself, just in case I feel like reading them all. Each book takes me one or two nights to read, time that I would probably otherwise waste watching TV. I like being able to say I’ve read all of any author’s work. It gives me a feeling of having accomplished something.

Oh, I know there are many other readers who would sneer at my choice. I know a thing or two about literary snobs, in part because I am one. Though I myself often ridicule the genre, and sometimes (more gently) the author, I have been enjoying my Barbara Michaels binge. Nothing makes me happier than light reading by an author who seemed to look upon the world in much the same way as I do.ย It’s not literary. It’s not deep. It’s just escapist reading. Anyone who looks down on escapist reading should remember that, as C.S. Lewis told Arthur C. Clarke, “The only people who object to escapism are jailers.” Escapism is what we need when we’re watching so many things in this world go wrong. Escapism is what we need when we’re confronted with our own powerlessness. Escapism is what we need when we just can’t get out of a bad mood. Escapism is necessity, now more than ever. I have found the form of escapism that works for me right now. I only hope that everyone else can, too!

List of Novels by Barbara Michaels (those I’ve read are in bold)

P.S. I’ve been keeping this list up to date, so there are quite a few more titles in bold than there initially were. As of 7/28/18, there are only 11 that I haven’t read.

P.P.S. As of 2/25/2021, there are only 6 that I haven’t read.

P.P.P.S. As of 6/6/2021, there are only two left.

P.P.P.P.S. On 1/3/2022 I finished the last one (The Walker in Shadows).

P.P.P.P.P.S. On 10/19/2025 I added the grades and links to my reviews. Two titles are lacking grades, probably because I’d read them already and didn’t feel like rereading them at the time. Of those graded, only five got A-level grades and were thus judged worth rereading someday. They were The Wizard’s Daughter (1980), The Grey Beginning (1984): A-, Shattered Silk (1986): A, Search the Shadows (1987): A, and Houses of Stone (1993): A-. On my shelves I see all of them except The Wizard’s Daughter. Though I gave it an A-, I don’t remember it as being particularly good, so I think I can live without it. Oddly, I still have a copy of The Crying Child. I’m not sure why I kept it. I guess I’ll have to read it again someday. Oh, no! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Stupid Coffee!

Poor Marshall. If he asks for anything in the morning, his parents are likely to answer, “Wait until I’m done drinking my coffee!”

One morning, while said parents were leisurely drinking their coffee, he was heard to lament, “Why do people drink stupid coffee?!?!”

It Could Have Been Worse

2018 hasn’t been a great year so far. Our cat died, then we all caught the flu, and then we had a nasty nor’easter that knocked our power out for 24 hours. I am thankful, though, that these things happened sequentially instead of at the same time. I can’t imagine trying to take care of a dying cat while we all had the flu, or being sick while the power was out and we had no heat. In other words, it could have been worse, and I am grateful that it wasn’t.
