Today’s Surprise

Today I found out that my former friend ran for State Representative in the election on Tuesday. I feel a little proud of her, because running for office is a big deal, and I feel a little sorry for her, because she lost. But she deserved to lose, because she was running as a Republican. On the bright side, I feel better about our friendship having ended, because I see now that it was probably inevitable.

  • I got my flu and Covid vaccines Monday before last. I had anticipated feeling like crap for at least 24 hours afterward, but in reality it wasn’t that bad. I got one shot per arm. The flu-shot arm hurt for a few days, as expected, but the pain from the Covid shot dissipated quickly. My joints were a little achier than usual for a while, and maybe I felt more fatigued (hard to say–I’m always fatigued), but that’s all. That is to say, the side-effects were minor. I’m glad to have gotten that done and over with. It’s going to be a long winter.
  • I have a new cell phone. It’s so ridiculously complicated that it’s driving me nuts, but it works better than my old phone, and it has a camera in it that’s better than my actual camera. I’ll probably be getting a monthly phone plan soon, too. Wouldn’t that be something.
  • My book-buying obsession has escalated, because now I’m buying books in French as well as in English. But, most of the French books are cute, little things that don’t take up a lot of space (so I tell myself, anyway).
  • My French lessons aren’t going as well as I’d like. The most recent block of lessons covered both le conditionnel and le gérontif. Both are relatively simple, but because they both involve tacking endings onto verbs, they’re kind of mixed up in my head now, and that’s not good. I miss my high-school French teacher. She would have made sure that I got all it down right (again). Teachers are so much better than apps.

  • Having given myself permission to buy a whole bunch of books didn’t also magically create space to put said books. How unexpected and unfortunate.
  • I never thought I’d be persuaded to try kale, let alone enjoy eating it, and yet now I like it in several dishes, including today’s lunch of kale roasted with sweet potatoes and chick peas.
  • Packing tape can indeed be used to hem a skirt for a short period of time, such as the amount of time it takes to go trick-or-treating with the kids, when the stakes are low. Masking tape would have been better, but I didn’t have any, so I gambled on the packing tape, and it paid off.
  • I was a queen for Halloween, crown and all. I was a cold queen, too. October gets chilly, don’t you know.
  • This morning, after seeing the kids off to school, my first task was to attend to the family “mold farm,” as the kids called it. We had had a slow cooker dish for dinner a few days ago and then apparently forgot to clean out the pot. Gross. On the other hand, one doesn’t often see pink mold, so at least there was that novelty.
  • I managed to ditch my morning caffeine addiction months ago, but I often flirt with danger by drinking decaf coffee and even the occasional caffeinated beverage. Caffeine would love to get me back into its evil clutches. Can I keep my hard-won freedom? Time will tell. My odds would be better if I never drank caffeinated beverages, though, especially in the morning.

Reading Report: 10/30/22

On the Bus with Rosa Parks by Rita Dove: I started this book of poetry back in 2021, but got distracted from it repeatedly. Last month I decided that enough was enough. I deliberately sat down and read it, cover to cover, over the course of a few days. My favorites were “Black on a Saturday Night,” “Incarnation in Phoenix,” “Best Western Motor Lodge, AAA Approved,” “The Peach Orchard,” “Against Self-Pity,” and the one I liked the best: “The Pond, Porch-View: Six P.M., Early Spring.”

Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher by Bruce Coville: How often is a book title so perfectly self-explanatory? Here is a sweet little book for anyone who ever wished they could hatch and raise a dragon (ooh, me me me!). I would have read this story as a child if I could have, but it hadn’t been published yet. Better late than never.

Harry Potter à L’École Des Sorciers by J.K. Rowling: This is the first book I ever read entirely in French. Reading in French is difficult, but I’ve gotten better at it. I know the language well enough to distinguish the parts of speech, and I can make reasonable guesses about the general nature of the words (e.g., “this is a verb of motion,” “this is an adjective having something to do with darkness,” etc.). That allowed me to continue reading even when I couldn’t guess the precise meanings of words, but it made reading a strange experience. So much detail was lost on me, and the images that the words created in my mind were drab. But was I was rewarded with great moments of victoriousness every time I managed to translate a knotty sentence without resorting to the dictionary (I didn’t want to get bogged down in definition hunting!). The big payoff was that I learned a lot of new words. My favorites: chuchoter (to whisper), jumeau (twin), and the tricky au-dessus/au-dessous pair (above/below).

Speaking of Goals . . .

Another goal I’ve been working on is finishing the Top 100 Children’s Books. Earlier this year it occurred to me that I’d had the list on my blog for a long time but hadn’t made much progress on it. The reason for my lack of progress was obvious–I hadn’t pushed myself to read any of the books. One of my worst habits is always assuming that I’ll get to things eventually. It’s a stupid assumption. Nothing in life ever gets done unless you go out of your way to do it.

So I started actively seeking out the books. My approach to reading them was simple: I put them in the bathroom. I always read when I’m in the bathroom. I can’t help myself. And even if it’s just a couple of pages each time, it adds up. I’ve read at least 15 from the list since I started deliberately leaving books in the bathroom. There are only 23 left on the list. I bet I could finish them by the end of the year if I really tried.

There are two downsides to my approach, though. For one thing, I would never put valuable books in the bathroom. There’s a lot of moisture in there, and moisture can be the death of books. Consequently only cheap soft-covers are allowed, and never loaners from the library. That means I have to buy the books, and books aren’t free.

The other downside is that I haven’t been reading the magazines that I would normally read in the bathroom. I have three magazine subscriptions, and I haven’t kept up with any of them lately. TBH, I wasn’t entirely keeping up with them before. I should drop one or two of the subscriptions. I can always resubscribe later if it seems like I’m running short on bathroom reading material.

So, now I am decided: I’m going to buy as many books as necessary to finish the list by the end of the year, and I’m going to drop two magazine subscriptions.

What’s the Goal?

I’ve been brushing up my French language skills since mid-August. It’s going well. My grasp of grammar is not as good now as it was in college, but I’ve gotten much better at reading in French, and I’ve learned some new vocabulary. All things considered, I am probably close to the level I was at when I graduated. That’s not bad. Two months of study to refresh a skill that I abandoned more than 25 years ago seems like a small price to pay.

The reason I started studying French again was because I wanted to finish what I had started so long ago. I wanted to finally learn to speak French. I had always assumed that I would someday, but I hadn’t yet as of earlier this year. I was then approaching my 50th birthday and realizing that my supply of somedays was running out. I knew it was now or never, so I started taking lessons online, and now I feel like I am on my way toward my goal.

But what exactly does it mean “to speak French?” At what point do I say, “OK, now I am fluent”? A goal isn’t really a goal without some mark to let you know that you’ve reached it.

What I mean when I say “fluent” is being able to comfortably and competently handle all four basic uses of the language: hearing, speaking, reading, and writing. My goal, then, should be to prove that I can do all of those things. I’m not sure yet how to test my writing skills, but the other three should be simple enough. My plan is to . . .

  • Finish all the courses in Babbel. This is the minimum and the easiest, most clearly defined goal.
  • Read an important work of French literature (such as Stendhal’s Le Rouge et le Noir or Dumas’s Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) in the original French.
  • Watch a French film without English subtitles and understand it well.
  • Have a good, long conversation in French with a native French speaker and without feeling like an idiot.

And I will achieve these goals by . . .

  • Finishing all the courses in Babbel.
  • Continuing to read children’s books in French. I am currently reading Le Lion, La Sorcière Blanche, et L’armoire Magique (Le roman original de C.S. Lewis). The level of writing in children’s books is what’s comfortable for me right now. I will move up to more challenging fiction when I am able.
  • Creating lists of vocabulary to memorize from the books that I’ve read. I get a lot of words from context, but I don’t always remember them later, and I depend too much on cognates. I need to get more French words firmly into my head.
  • Taking some live online classes so that I can talk to other people in French. Live classes are pricey, though, and I won’t start taking them until I’ve improved my grammar and my vocabulary.
  • Watching French films with English subtitles, and watching American films with dubbed French tracks. When I get to a point when English subtitles seem superfluous, I’ll turn the subtitles off.

Random 10/19/22

  • On Sunday we took the kids to a local farm to get some apples and pumpkins. We decided to try two classic apple varieties that we hadn’t had before. One was Northern Spy, which we baked into an an apple crisp. They started browning as soon as they were cut, and they cooked down to a dry mush. The flavor was fine, a little on the tart side. I don’t think I’d want to use them in a pie, because of how mushy they got, but maybe for applesauce. We also bought some Spencer apples for eating out of hand. I had some for breakfast yesterday and today. Very tasty.
  • “Curds and whey” is cottage cheese. I just found that out a few weeks ago. How did I get so far in life not knowing that?
  • This year I turned 50. I also had my 14th wedding anniversary, and my 25th work anniversary, not to mention my 15th blogiversary. The years are really stacking up now.
  • Yesterday I had an appointment with my eye doctor. Excellent news–I haven’t lost any vision since my previous visit and the retinal layers have settled down some.

Last Weekend

  • We visited my parents last weekend. It was great to finally see them again. We spent most of the weekend just catching up. Otherwise we didn’t do much except take a few walks. That was fine by me. I was tired and needed some quiet time.
  • They lent me their car, which I drove home with Livia while my husband drove home in the truck with Marshall (kids can’t fight each other for the whole trip if they’re not in the same vehicle!). I am so relieved to finally have a reliable car to drive. My parents said we can keep it for as long as we need it, but I hope to return it to them by Christmas.
  • The drive home was stressful. It took about 6 hours, thanks to traffic. I don’t think I’d ever driven myself through mountains before, and I found the downhill curves to be alarming. Everyone else on the highway was calmly maintaining speed, but I had to hit the brakes almost every time, because my brain was screaming, “OMG, slow down slow down slow down!”
  • But the drive through Franconia Notch was wonderful. It looked more gorgeous than I’d ever seen it before, a stunning contrast of fiery autumn foliage and cool misty clouds. That view alone made the long drive worthwhile. If I’d had time to spare, I would have stopped there and spent a few days just wandering around, soaking up the scenery.

International Beverage, I Think

A while back, my husband ordered a box of Korean ramen. Mixed among the packages of ramen were these things:

Mystery Packages

Aside from the name (Maxim), the only English words on the packaging were “easy cut” and “other,” none of which was helpful for figuring out what was inside. They looked like packages of instant coffee, though, and we assumed that’s what they were. After receiving a book from France today, I was in the mood for an international beverage, so I finally opened one of them up and poured the contents into a coffee cup. I added hot water to the cup, and voila!

Sure looks like coffee.

I took a cautious first sip. It was boiling hot, and I wasn’t 100% sure what to expect. I mean, we hope that Korean-ramen sellers don’t have a sick sense of humor, but for all we knew, those were packages of plant fertilizer. It tasted just like coffee with sugar and creamer, though. To be honest, I had been hoping for something a little more exciting–some unexpected flavor, strange yet delicious and non-fertilizery–but even ordinary hot coffee is a nice thing to drink on a cool, fall-like day such as this. Quel plaisir.

International Mail

I got some international mail today!

Magicien: L’Apprenti by Raymond Feist
I have read this book in English dozens of times. I’ve found that I can read Harry Potter relatively easily in French because I know the story so well. I’m hoping the same will be true for this book.
