Mystery Flower #2

There’s a shrub growing near the corner of our driveway. It’s not an attention grabber most of the time, but during the spring it decks itself out with these stunning coral-colored flowers.

Can you guess what kind of shrub it is?

    It’s a flowering quince.

Our search for the identity of this plant is a perfect example of how easy it is to get completely turned around and headed in the wrong direction. We started with the right answer but we were led astray first by the Internet and then by our neighbor.

You see, Faithful Reader described the plant to someone at a nursery and she said it might be quince. So Faithful Reader and I looked up quince online and after seeing pictures on the Internet, we were both convinced that it was not quince. Then our neighbor told us it was Rose of Sharon and we (stupidly) believed her.

It was a bargain book about shrubbery that finally set us straight. And that’s why book shopping, while clearly dangerous, is nonetheless necessary.
