A Book and a Movie

The Princess Bride by William Goldman
Grade: A

One of my dark, dirty secrets: I did not like the movie version of “The Princess Bride” the first time I saw it. I didn’t hate it, but it didn’t speak to me in the same way that it spoke to so many others. Because it’s such a popular film, my not liking it felt almost like a personal failing. I think that’s what made me buy the book—I was hoping that I could redeem myself by liking it.

The movie follows the book fairly closely. I know, because after reading the book, I watched the movie again to see if I liked it any better. I did and I didn’t. I enjoyed Mandy Patinkin’s performance this time around. He was graceful and endearing. But there was yet something about the movie script and the acting that just didn’t work for me. The whole thing was “off” somehow.

The book also has an “off” element that bothered me. The author created an extra fiction around the origin of the story, including a fictional author, fictional countries, a fictional family, and fictional legal problems. I was pretty sure that he was making it up, at least some of it, but I wasn’t sure how much, and I really disliked the way he talked about his family, fictional or not. He insulted his fictional wife, contemplated cheating on her, and also called his kid fat. Not very nice.

This “off” element didn’t ruin the tale of the Princess Bride, which was unique and funny, not to mention an easy read. The irony is that if I ever read it aloud to a child, I would edit out the parts that I didn’t like, just as the author pretended that his grandfather did with the original story.

The Princess Bride has earned a home on my shelf. I still feel bad about not liking the movie, but there are lots of movies that I love and the general public hates, so let’s call it even.

Not Too Late

If you want to join in the Vonnegut Marathon, it’s not too late. There’s still time to run a leg or two, and that’s better than nothing. You have only to look at my Book Love page to see which ones I’d recommend.

When Does It End?

It occurred to me today that we are getting near the end of the Vonnegut Marathon. But on what day does it actually end? Hmm. I never specified the ending date. Let’s go with April 11th, the one-year anniversary of his death. That leaves me with less than a month to finish up Hocus Pocus and Timequake. Uh-oh. I better get a move on!

Another “A” for Vonnegut

Bluebeard by Kurt Vonnegut
Grade: A

I thought I’d read all of Vonnegut’s best, so it was a wonderful surprise to find so much to like in Bluebeard. I wish I still had the book handy so I could refresh my memory before writing this post and maybe even select a few good passages to share. Alas, the library insisted that I return the book and so I did.

Bluebeard is about a retired painter who, like the infamous Bluebeard of lore, keeps something big hidden in a locked room. The secret gives the book a little bit of a mystery, which is unusual for Vonnegut, but fun. You don’t know what’s going to be in that room. Will it be dead bodies? Or will it be something completely different? I won’t spoil it for you. You’ll have to read it yourself to find out.

The last couple of weeks have been so crazy that everything else has been overshadowed, including this book. Like it though I did, I don’t think I got as much out of it as I could have. I hope that I get a chance to reread it someday.

Where Was I?

I was elsewhere, both in mind and heart, and so there were no words for the blog. Now, if I’m lucky, some words will ask to make their home here. I will be happy to oblige them.

A Whole Year

The one-year anniversary of our move to RI quietly sneaked by last weekend. I can’t believe it’s been a whole year!

Caffeine-Deprived

No coffee today. Still alive. Barely.

Goodbye, Sweet Elixir

I am thinking about giving up the Elixir of Life, what most people call “coffee.” Coffee itself is not that bad, but I would be much better off without all the cream, creamer, and sugar that I use in support of the habit. Faithful Reader is concerned that the lack of caffeine will turn me into a Morning Monster (this from the man who got me addicted in the first place!), but I have faith in the power of tea as a substitute for coffee.

Sometimes

Sometimes I use the word “sometimes” too often.
