Day 231: A Snowy Day

The weather forecast had prepared us for mixed precipitation, but not for several inches of snow, and we awoke to an unexpectedly white world.

Um, I thought it was October?

It looked like Christmas, not Halloween. Why don’t we get snow like this for Christmas? There were even candy canes!

Snowy Candy Canes

The kids wasted no time. They had their snow-wear on before anyone could even think to sing “Do you want to build a snowman?” And build a snowman they did.

Little Billy

Little Billy was, in fact, taller than I am. He was the biggest snowman I had ever seen. But the kids weren’t done playing in the snow yet, and after building Billy, they created trails on the driveway for me to walk on.

Perilous Trails

These were perilous trails. One was the Trail of Death, the kids informed me, and every step on it would bring me a 1% chance of death. There also was a Puddle of Death, and a Slide of Death, and . . .

At that point, I had to cut them off and reprimand them. “No children of mine are allowed to be so linguistically lazy! There are other dark words besides ‘death.’ Get creative!” And soon there were sites of Termination and Zombification and other horrors, which was more like it.

The trees fared better than the last time we had an October storm. There were no broken limbs, just the unusual beauty that comes of mixing seasons.

It was so lovely outside that I might have wished to walk and take pictures all day, but it was also brutally cold. My hands and feet soon turned numb. It wasn’t long before I went back inside, where I knew a warm fire awaited me.

Day 230: Making Space

Every autumn it starts to get cold, and every time we face the same dilemma: what to do with the air conditioners. They have to come out of the windows, but then where do they go? In the past, we’ve often left our bedroom AC on the floor for lack of a better solution. But this year, I refused to have the serenity of my bedroom ruined that way.

My theory is that every room with an AC ought to have a table under which the AC can sit for the cold months, and that’s basically what we’ve done in other rooms of the house. Unfortunately, we didn’t have space for a table in our bedroom.

But what we did have was an ottoman, and it occurred to us that if the ottoman were hollow, the AC might fit underneath it.

And behold!

The Hollow Ottoman
Plenty of room for an AC in here!

So now the AC is out of the window and tucked out of the sight. And just in time. Frigid weather is on the way.

Day 229: Pumpkins

Normally we don’t decorate the house for Halloween, but this year we needed to. So the kids and I created some homemade decorations. And when my husband saw pumpkins at the store, he bought some for us. Here’s what the kids did with them:

Marshall’s Jack-o’-Lantern
Livia’s Pumpkin Cat

Day 228: Animals and Zombies

Last night I finished reading Doctor Dolittle’s Circus by Hugh Lofting. In this episode of the series, the Doctor needs to make some quick cash to pay off a debt, so he and his animal friends hatch a plan to join the circus, with his newest friend, the two-headed Pushmi-Pullyu, as the money-making attraction. But though the Doctor’s animal friends are his willing allies, the other animals at the circus are being held in captivity, and the Doctor will have to do something about that! This story was exactly the kind of sweet and silly reading that I needed, and it cheered me up immensely.

I am now reading Dead City by James Ponti. Its zombie theme makes it appropriate reading for Halloween week, but it’s much funnier than it is gruesome or scary, which suits me perfectly.

Day 227: Pending

Today I tracked my mail-in ballot. It has been received and is pending certification. I will check again before Election Day to make sure that it’s been certified. For now I’m just glad to know it didn’t get lost in the mail.

Day 226: It Stinks

Today I sent my husband to Target to pick up some needed supplies, including hand soap and tissues. But what I really wanted was some Lysol or Clorox bathroom cleaner. I’ve been trying to get some for months, but apparently it cannot be had, which stinks (figuratively). So I had to settle for the Seventh Generation brand. It comes in a smaller bottle and costs more, and people say it stinks (literally), but beggars can’t be choosers.

Day 225: Lesson Learned

I ordered 20 books from the library last week, and they arrived today. Hooray! According to our library receipt, we saved $300 by borrowing rather than buying. Isn’t the library awesome?

But I haven’t forgotten how the library shut down without warning earlier this year. It was understandable given the circumstances, and I’m certainly not mad about it, but I learned a valuable lesson: always keep plenty of books on hand! So, in a few weeks I will probably put in another large order. I don’t expect the library to close again, given how well masks and social distancing seem to work, but I’m not taking any chances!

Day 224: Happy Trails

Our driveway was covered in leaves. My husband cleared a trail for Livia to bike on. The kids liked it so much that they made more trails. Now I have all these routes to choose from as I walk.

Day 223: I Still Hope I’m Wrong

Three COVID-19 cases were reported this week in our school system: a staff member at one middle school, a student at the other middle school, and a child in the preschool program. It hasn’t even been three weeks since in-school learning started back up. But, though we might have hoped it would take longer for COVID-19 to get into the schools, we all knew it would happen eventually.

What we didn’t (and still don’t) know is whether or not we’re going to see more community spread, or lose any members of our community, as a result. Case numbers are up in most states, though I don’t know how much of that can be blamed on school openings. Nationally, several educators have already died from the virus, including most recently in Arkansas, Tennessee, and Missouri. The virus is under better control here than it is in those states, but I think we will suffer some losses, too, if we keep the schools open. I still hope I’m wrong, though.

Day 222: Leaves

Colorful Array of Maple Leaves

We are so fortunate to be having a good foliage season this year. The caterpillars didn’t defoliate the trees during the spring, so we’ve got big, beautiful leaves like these falling in our yard. This is just a sampling of the color variations I noticed as I was walking today. The bright yellows are becoming rarer, giving way to the oranges and reds, but all the colors are beautiful. Marshall believes that catching a falling leaf gives you good luck. If he’s right (and I think he is), then he’s a very lucky boy. I love watching the leaves fall, whether in spirals, zigzags, or lazy meanders.
