Day 218: Something to Look Forward To

I talked to my mom today, and we agreed on a plan to get to together for Christmas. The plan involves strictly quarantining for a week beforehand and attempting to drive the entire distance with no bathroom breaks. It will be inconvenient, but we believe it’s both doable and worth doing. We have canceled nearly every other holiday, birthday, and event this year. Later this month there will be no trick-or-treating, and in November there will be no Thanksgiving get-together. But, we all have our limits, and none of us could imagine cancelling Christmas, especially since by that time it will have been a whole year since we last got together.

This plan is subject to change, of course. Who knows what the situation will be in December? But at least for now we have something to look forward to.

Day 217: Rescheduled

Last October I scheduled my annual physical for this day. I had forgotten all about until I checked my voicemail last night and got the reminder. I thought about keeping the appointment, but I wasn’t in the mood for that kind of stress, so I decided to reschedule instead (for March, in hopes that the pandemic situation will have improved by then).

To give the doctor as much notice as possible, I got up at 8:00 a.m. to make the call. Getting up earlier than usual affected my perception of time. The morning dragged. The afternoon flew by. The evening hours slowed down again, and by 11:00 p.m. it felt like 2:00 a.m. I went to bed early.

Early to rise, early to bed.

Day 216: Change of Scenery

Today we went to the park. My husband and daughter rode their bikes while Marshall and I went for a hike (Marshall’s bike is busted, so biking wasn’t an option for him). It was a breezy day in a large park with few people, so we were able to go maskless for most of our visit, for which I’m grateful. It was good to be away from home for a while.

What a gorgeous day! Thanks to yesterday’s rain, the world smells of acorns and autumn leaves.

Day 214: Every Last Drop

It rained today. Downpoured, even. I went out for a walk, and even with an umbrella, I got soaked. I didn’t mind, though. We need every last drop that falls.

Day 213: Memory

Life is all memory except for the one present moment that goes by so quick you can hardly catch it going.

Day 211: I Hope I’m Wrong

This week our public schools welcomed students back for the first time since March. There were some hiccups, especially at dismissal time, or so I heard. I was not there to see it, and neither were my children, because we’re continuing with distance learning.

Distance learning is working out well, but I have to admit that I’m a little jealous of those other kids and their parents. How exciting for them to have their first real school day! But I worry for them, too. COVID-19 cases are on the rise again. I’m afraid that open schools will contribute to community spread, and that more people will get sick, perhaps even die. Only time will tell. I like to be right, usually, but in this matter I hope I’m wrong.
