Day 59: Odds and Ends

I did a few tasks from my ongoing to-do list, including a donation to the food bank and an order from my local bookstore. I don’t need any books, but I would like to still have a bookstore when we finally get through these “uncertain times,” so I threw them some business. Speaking of books, I am trying for the second time to read Greenglass House by Kate Milford, but it’s painfully slow, and I don’t know if I’ll stick with it.

Day 58: Simple Sunday

Today, had it been a normal, non-pandemic Sunday, I probably would have gone out. First I might have stopped at the library to drop off old books and pick up new ones. While I was there, I might have taken a walk on the trails. How nice that would have been! I might also have gone to Target to buy new summer clothing for the kids, because it’s that time of year. But who cares anymore about clothing? The kids have clothing left over from last year. Sure, much of it is old and worn, stained, perhaps getting a mite small, but it’s not like anyone else is going to see how they’re dressed. They won’t need much anyway, since they probably won’t be going to summer camp. Perhaps I might also have picked up some cereal and snacks, two things that we used to need constantly. Quick breakfasts and handy snacks help a mom get her kids to the bus stop on time! But there are no more morning school buses and no more classroom snack breaks.

So today was a simple Sunday. I simply worked on my blog, cleaned up a little here and there, and mused on how different things are now.

Ten One-Word Book Titles

Back in March I was offered the challenge of coming up with a list of favorite books with one-word titles. I never got around to posting my list. Oops. But here it is now.

  1. “Coraline” by Neil Gaiman (favorite one-word Gaiman)
  2. “Heidi” by Johanna Spyri (children’s classic)
  3. “Grass” by Sheri S. Tepper (for people who like thoughtful and slightly disturbing science fiction)
  4. “Nemesis” by Agatha Christie (one of Christie’s best Miss Marple mysteries)
  5. “Horns” by Joe Hill (for the horror crowd)
  6. “Emma” by Jane Austen (for the Austen crowd)
  7. “Dune” by Frank Herbert (must-read sci-fi)
  8. “Matilda” by Roald Dahl (children’s classic)
  9. “Holes” by Louis Sachar (surprisingly sweet YA novel)
  10. “Bluebeard” by Kurt Vonnegut (favorite one-word Vonnegut)

Day 57: Make Way for Children

I took Marshall with me for a short walk today. I should always take a kid with me when I walk on the road. Drivers actually slowed down and practically drove in the middle of the road to put more distance between us and them. Had it been just me, they would have zoomed past without a care.

Day 56: Escape Through Music

I am finding some of Philip Glass’s compositions to be therapeutic to play on the piano lately. It’s a type of music that is rhythmic and repetitive, and not very melodic. People either love it or hate it. I sincerely hope that the people who hear me playing these very similar and repetitive pieces every day don’t want to kill me.

Day 55: And Today Is . . .

Me today: Tomorrow is Friday? But that would mean today is Thursday. Is today Thursday? OMG, today is Thursday. I had no idea.

Day 54: At Last, Groceries

Today my husband went to BJ’s and bought some groceries. We have eggs again. And crackers. If only we had a little fresh fruit (which BJ’s is not good for), it would be like heaven. Oh, well. One of us will go to the grocery store soon and buy some fruit.

Day 53: Walking

I am out of shape, and I need to get more fresh air and sunshine. Today I went for a walk on my driveway again and counted my steps. It is roughly 125 steps from the garage door to the edge of the road, so each round trip is 250 steps. I walked the driveway four times today. I also went out on the road for a bit. Total walking count: about 2,000 steps.

I don’t normally measure my walks in steps, nor do I intend to keep it up. I’m just trying to push myself to get some minimum amount of outdoor exercise each day. I haven’t decided yet what the minimum should be. A thousand steps is hardly anything. Two thousand is a nice pick-me-up, possibly acceptable as an absolute minimum.

I’m also trying to decide where to walk. Every place has its pros and cons. Some places would require brush cutting and/or tick clothes. Some require a mask, which I would have to buy or make (I have an N95, but not an everyday-wear mask). Some places might have people in larger quantities than I care to encounter right now. I guess I’ll just have to scope them all out and see how it goes. In the meantime, my driveway is safe, mostly tick-free, and doesn’t require a mask, and short trips out on the road aren’t too bad, though there’s far more traffic than seems appropriate for a pandemic.

Wherever I go, I’m sure I will find things to look at. Today, along the side of the road, I discovered these beauties.

This appears to be some type of spurge (edit: most likely cypress spurge). I am unfamiliar with this plant, so I will have to do more research.
This has the look of a fruit tree, but I’m not sure which kind. Maybe crab apple.

Day 52: Lists, Lists, Lists

Yesterday I finished my book, but that was the only task I was able to cross off my weekend to-do list for the day. Today, to make up for yesterday’s laziness, I cleaned the downstairs bathroom and part of the master bathroom. Both bathrooms really needed it, as does the third bathroom, which I haven’t gotten to yet. Pandemics have a lot of downsides, one of which is that our bathrooms get dirtier faster, because the kids are at home all day. If I were keeping a list of “Additional Ways in Which Pandemics Suck,” I would add it. But we all know how sucky pandemics are. We don’t need a list to remind us.

Day 51: List Continued

In yesterday’s post I talked about my weekend to-do list. Writing blog posts was #19 on the list, and once I am done writing this post, I will be able to cross it off. I will also be able to cross off #12, “Call Mom.” She actually called me first, but I didn’t answer in time, so I had to call her back. Thus I can say that I not only talked to her (which was the point of calling), but I also did literally call her. Unfortunately, I will have to replace it with “Call Eric,” because my mom told me that his wife is ill with coronavirus symptoms. ๐Ÿ™ I hope she will be OK.

I am feeling extra lazy today, so I will probably focus on the least difficult things remaining on the list. For example, #1 is “Finish book.” I’ve been reading the same book for at least a month, and I’m sick of it. I’ve got about 130 pages left. That’s not a lot, and there’s no reason I can’t finish it today. And #8, “Go through stack of papers,” doesn’t sound too bad either. It will be tedious, sure, but once it’s done my office will be neater than it’s been in years.

But first I will do the unwritten task, which is to go outside and soak up a little bit of afternoon sunlight!
