In a Fix

People always say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” In this modern world of disposable everything, we might as well drop the “If it ain’t broke” part. No one fixes broken things either. Not electronics or appliances. Not furniture or clothes. Sometimes not even cars.

Thanks to an accident on last New Year’s Eve day, my car has been totaled. When I was younger and heard people talking about a car being “totaled,” I figured it meant the vehicle was totally destroyed, so mangled it couldn’t possibly be fixed. That would make sense, but that’s not what it means. What it means is that the insurance company doesn’t value your car enough to bother fixing it. They just want to cut the smallest check possible and move along.

This is my car.

Poor Car

There’s plenty of damage, but most of the car is still fully functional, including the engine. It doesn’t matter. The insurance company just doesn’t care.

My car is not the only broken thing evident in this picture. See the pink band across the top of the picture? No, it’s not my quirky way of supporting breast cancer research. My camera is broken, too.

While I would fix my car if I could, I have no idea where to get a camera fixed, because I’ve never heard of anyone fixing one. By today’s standards, with only 4 megapixels, it’s a dinosaur and ought to be replaced anyway. I can just imagine the blank stare I’d get if I actually asked someone for the name of a good camera repairman.

“A good what?”

Oh, well. It’s fun to have new stuff all the time. And if replacing all of my belongings every few years gets expensive, that’s ok, because you know what else is broke? The average American. At least I’ll be in good company.

Dr. Internet

The Internet has its uses, but as a tool for diagnosing disease, it often does more harm than good. The world is full of hypochondriacs who cannot resist the temptation to Google their symptoms, ever searching for some dire disease with which to be afflicted. It only takes minutes to convince themselves that they have a brain tumor, or MS, or God knows what. I should know. I am a recovering hypochondriac.

We all ought to know better. Not only is the Internet rife with false information, but the average person is completely incapable of judging which condition really fits their symptoms. And yet . . .

When the vet failed to diagnose our Peeps’s poop problem, I went to the Internet. I couldn’t help myself. I was getting desperate. By that point, all three cats were showing symptoms. Based on what I found on the Internet, I decided that coccidia was the most likely culprit. I told the vet, she acted like she’d never heard of it, and she proceeded to medicate the cats for a different condition. That medication did not work. Later, when she went on maternity leave, I asked her replacement about coccidia. The new vet replied (and I am still shocked), “Yes, that’s the next obvious thing to try.”

After ten days of grudgingly letting us shove another round of pills down their throats, the cats seem to be better. We won’t know for sure until they get through a few more diarrhea-free days, but I think they’re finally cured.

Meanwhile, I’m not feeling so well. I think I may have an abdominal tumor, or maybe elephantitis, or . . . . Nah. I’m just pregnant.

Another Year of Reading

I did a lot of reading in 2008, an average of one book per week, but still I wish I could have done more. There are so many books to enjoy for the first time and so many old friends to revisit. I don’t know if I’d be satisfied if I had read twice as many!

Looking over the grades I gave the books of 2008, I’m glad to see there were plenty of A’s. Which one gets the honor of being called my favorite book of 2008? That’s easy. My favorite was The Sun in the Morning by M.M. Kaye. I gave a copy of it to my friend for Christmas. I hope she will find it as enthralling as I did.

I generally prefer fiction over nonfiction, so it seems odd to me that a nonfiction book should be my favorite for the year. Even odder still is that my second favorite is also a nonfiction book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. Both books were interesting and educational. They reminded me that nonfiction doesn’t have to be dull, which is good lesson to carry into the new year. I will try to read more nonfiction in 2009.

Wishing everyone a wonderful and reading-filled 2009,

Chick

Movie Highlight

I just watched the end of Rudolph’s Shiny New Year, a classic movie in which Santa Claus says, “I oughta be able to get you to Father Time in a few bongs!”

Santa, you do enough bongs and you can imagine yourself anywhere, anywhen.

Christmas Chuckle

Here’s a funny moment from Christmas.

Faithful Reader and I were at my parents’ house and we were talking about babies. My father said that he thought the reason my brother had been born two weeks early was because the doctor had hurried the birth along. He said, “The doctor told us your mother was distended. Or distorted.” As I laughed over the obviousness of “distended” and the outrageousness of “distorted,” I wondered what word he was looking for. My mother soon filled it in. She said, “I think you mean dilated, Dear.”

Lesson from 2008

While we were at Watkins Glen in July, I found this adorable little caterpillar. I photographed him and started to put my camera away. Faithful Reader asked, “Aren’t you going to take a picture from the other side?” I didn’t feel the need, but Faithful Reader did. He took my camera and snapped this shot. Looking at the pictures now, I think that the caterpillar’s creepy gripping parts are far more interesting than his hairy back. Really, if you’ve seen one hairy back, you’ve seen more than enough.

Grippy Parts

In 2009, I will try to remember to look at things from all sides.

Very Fattening Cake

I had a birthday in September.

I got pregnant in October.

Is there any correlation between those two occurrences?

Yes. Take a look at this.

Cake

Is it any wonder I got pregnant after eating this birthday fertility cake?

Great Expectations

Now that Faithful Reader and I have shared the big news with our families, I can now state it publicly.

I’m pregnant!

We told Faithful Reader’s parents by giving them an ultrasound picture in a photo album on Christmas Eve. We thought that would be a fun way to tell everyone, but our surprise was very nearly spoiled by his sister, our hostess for the evening, who kept questioning why I was drinking only water. I don’t think she believed my excuses, so she must have felt vindicated when the grandparents finally opened their special gift. The grandparents were thrilled by the news and soon began hovering around my belly as if awaiting the birth of the Chosen One.

We told my parents with a similar gift on Christmas Day. They didn’t know what to make of it at first, but Mom seemed happy enough later when she gave the news to her brother over the phone.

Whew! Now I can relax and let it all hang out. I wasn’t going to be able to hide my belly much longer, that’s for sure!

Year-End Reading

I thought it would be fun to reread the entire Harry Potter series, so that’s what I’ve been up to lately. I already finished the first three (The Sorcerer’s Stone, The Chamber of Secrets, and The Prisoner of Azkaban). I’m not going to review them, since they’re all immune to the GLP, but there will be some small changes to my blog as a result of rereading the series. For one thing, I’ll have to update my Characters page by including descriptions of all the notable characters in the Harry Potter universe. That will take some time, I imagine.

The other change is to my Random Quotes collection. I have already added to it some of the wisdom of J.K. Rowling in the form of quotes by her characters. I will add more as I continue reading. If you haven’t checked out my collection of quotes yet, please do. I try to pull from all sorts of sources about all sorts of subjects, from the silly to the serious, and I hope you enjoy it!

In Search of Culture

In retrospect, I think my 2008 might have been somewhat lacking in culture. One of the few culture-y things I can remember doing this year was the Corning Museum of Glass. While I was there, I took this picture.

Chihuly Sculpture

This is a glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly. It is called “Fern Green Tower,” which is a lovely name, though the overall effect of the piece seems more yellow than green to me (but hey, that’s one of the nice things about being an artist—you can pick any names you want for your pieces).

While Faithful Reader and I were zooming along the highway recently, I saw an advertisement for a local Chihuly exhibit. It is at the Rhode Island School of Design’s Museum of Art. It ends on January 4, so anyone who wants to see it should get going.

Faithful Reader, would you like to squeeze a little more culture into your 2008 by accompanying me to this exhibit?
